Dear Parents and Guardians

The popularity of our Winter sports is one of the redeeming features for those who dislike the frostiness of the middle term in Marondera! We have had a wonderful start to the term with both the sports and the Interhouse cultural events. Congratulations to the girls that have performed in any of these events – it’s looking like we are in for a great season!

The girls that stayed over the weekend were rewarded with a sleep in on Monday followed by some Africa Day celebration and a brunch that had even the staff drooling! In the spirit of Africa and our shared history, the D Block then embarked on a tour of Great Zimbabwe. An incredible piece of our Zimbabwean past and a very worthwhile place for everyone to visit.

If you have been to the school this term, you would have seen the refurbishment that has gone on to improve our front entrance. The finishing touches are being completed over the next few weeks, but it’s lovely to see our school continually becoming more beautiful. As you go out and enjoy your fixture free weekends, could I remind everyone that if they have not yet handed in their crochet squares, that will need to be done after the weekend. The blankets we make are a welcome gift at Musha Wevana Orphanage in the chilly winter evenings.

A few reminders of upcoming events; Buckland Arts starts next week; this is always a highlight in our school calendar. Then we shall be having House braais this term, we encourage parents to come and join their daughters for these.

This has been a great start to the term, I hope everyone has a wonderful and restful weekend, and comes back ready to continue in this stead.

Yours sincerely,

Mrs Claire Hough
Headmistress

PARENT-TEACHER MEETINGS

This term, A Block will have their parent-teacher consultation (just before the third Fixture-Free weekend begins) on Friday, 10th July between 10:00 and 11:45 in the PHG Dining Hall. This follows their mock examinations and will facilitate important discussions ahead of finalising your A Block daughter’s IGCSE entries.

The upcoming consultation will begin with an Upper School open day for all A Block parents. This event will be held at PHB starting at 08:00 and will provide an introduction to the Upper School campus, along with essential information regarding Vth Form AS and A Level subject choices.

Additionally, C Block parents will have their parent-teacher consultation at 08:30 in the Dining Hall on the final day of term, Thursday, 6th August. Prior to this, there will be a crucial presentation in the Chapel at 08:00 regarding B Block IGCSE subject choices, with the submission deadline set for the beginning of the third term.

B and D Block parent-teacher meetings will take place in the third term.

A BLOCK MOCK EXAMINATION AND B BLOCK MID-YEAR EXAMINATION DATES

A Block mock examinations and B Block mid-year examinations will take place after half-term between Wednesday, 24th June and Monday, 6th July. Please ensure that your A or B Block daughter is not missing school over these dates.

D BLOCK PRACTICAL SET CHANGES

This term, D Block practical sets change after half-term. Girls currently doing Art and DT will be doing Food & Nutrition and Music after half-term and need to bring back a white apron and a plastic container in which to put their cooking (both clearly marked with their names).

D BLOCK HISTORY TRIP TO GREAT ZIMBABWE

As part of their history curriculum, D Block will visit Great Zimbabwe from Monday, May 25th, to Wednesday,

Debate Tour

Peterhouse recently participated in the inaugural Africa World Schools Debate Championship (AWSDC) and Public Speaking event, hosted by RPDA and Gauteng Debate at the University of Pretoria.

Anashe Mudzudzu achieved 9th place as the Best Junior Public Speaker among 32 competitors.
Rufaro Matsika secured 4th place as the Best Senior Public Speaker, also out of 32 speakers.
Alyssa Zindi was recognized as the Best Junior Public Speaker of the Tournament.

Zimbabwe National Debate

Shiloh Deetlefs represented the Zimbabwe National Debate Team at the EAWSDC International Debate Tournament held in Nairobi, Kenya, from May 7th to 12th , which featured 64 competing teams. Congratulations to her team for earning a trophy for finishing third in the quarterfinals.

Shiloh also received two gold medals: one for achieving a standard deviation of less than 0.5 and another for ranking among the top 50 speakers, finishing 34th out of 320.

Chisipite Debate Forum

Our senior debate club members participated in a forum hosted by Chisipite Senior School, joined by four other schools. The forum, themed “Borders Don’t Define Us,” was a student-led initiative focused on collaboration and idea sharing rather than competitive debating. This provided our debaters an opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions on various factors contributing to brain drain in Zimbabwe and how we, as a nation, can support local talent to showcase their work internationally without leaving the country. Overall, it was a valuable experience that showcased our girls’ critical thinking skills, and we look forward to more events of this nature.

GAVEL

At their first Toastmasters’ meet of the term, hosted by Hellenic, the Peterhouse Boys and Girls Gavel clubs engaged in a series of compelling prepared and impromptu speeches. The discussions highlighted a shared theme among the A-Level candidates: while eager to finish high school, they all feel a mutual sense of trepidation about stepping into the world of young adults. From philosophical debates on the nature of life and critiques of money as an evil resource, to confident impromptu deliveries, the session beautifully reflected the growing eloquence and assurance of speakers from all three schools.

MODEL UNITED NATIONS

From the 14th to the 16th of May, sixteen members of our Model United Nations delegation attended the CHIMUN conference hosted at Chisipite Senior School. The conference brought together pupils from more than 10 schools from as far as Bulawayo. The delegates engaged in debates on pressing global issues, centred around this year’s theme: `The Ethics of Progress: When does innovation become exploitation and cultural erasure? Our delegation participated actively and demonstrated strong research skills with, most notably, Olivia Chimberengwa being awarded Most Promising Delegate in her respective committee.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL AWARD

Peterhouse Girls takes pride in offering pupils the opportunity to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award programme, a globally recognised award that encourages young people to develop confidence, leadership, resilience, and independence through service, skills development, physical recreation, and adventurous journeys.

The programme provides pupils with valuable life experiences beyond the classroom and helps them build qualities that are highly regarded by universities and future employers. Participation allows pupils to challenge themselves, discover new interests, contribute positively to their communities, and grow into well-rounded global citizens. We encourage parents to support and motivate their children as they embark on this rewarding journey of personal growth and achievement.

Congratulations to Leanne Zivanayi who received her Bronze Award during the holidays. If you would like your daughter to participate, please send an email to tmufunda@phg.co.zw
