Dear Parents and Guardians,
Unbelievably, we are at the halfway point of the Lent Term, and with it comes some changes in school routines particularly on the sports fields. In the classroom, all the academic audits have been completed and a thorough review of our 2025 examinations has now been concluded. Beyond the classroom, the shift to athletics and some pre-season winter sport coaching will take place in the coming weeks. On Sunday 1 March the PHB/PHG Combined Inter-House Athletics (Sports Day) takes place This is followed on Saturday 7 March, by the Inter-schools Invitational Relays meeting: always a highlight in our sports calendar. A number of our sports teams will also start preparation for tours to South Africa at the beginning of the Easter holidays.
It has been well reported in the local media That ATS Schools Heads and Governors held a meeting with the Minister of Primary and Secondary Education (MoPSE), Honorable Dr T Moyo, on Thursday 12 February. A number of issues were discussed, the most significant relating to the matter of the Heritage Based Curriculum, to which all Zimbabwean schools must follow. Added to this there was acknowledgement of a “blended curriculum” inclusive of the Cambridge International Examinations.
The Association of Trust Schools (ATS) will continue to engage and work with MoPSE on this, and all matters raised at the recent meeting. ATS will continue to work hard to ensure that our schools continue to provide a relevant (locally and internationally), high quality, holistic education that parents want for their children in ATS Schools.
The Conference of Heads of Independent Schools in Zimbabwe (CHISZ) held its annual mini conference in Nyanga recent. CHISZ celebrates, this year, the 70th Anniversary of its foundation in 1956. A takeaway of the recent conference was a presentation by Chris Storey, a current Headmaster in South Africa, was an overview and reflection of “Living our Values in our Schools”. The relevance of this was not lost on Peterhouse having, as part of our recent strategic thinking, revisited our Mission, Vision and Values statements. Included in this Newsletter is our Values Statement which, in its construction, resonated with the message delivered at the recent Conference. In the next Newsletter we will share with you the Mission and Vision Statements.
This week sees the Group celebrate “Mission Week” where we profile and reinforce our spiritual life at Peterhouse. Supported by the Chaplains we welcome the “Mission Week” team to the school. Their arrival in the first week of Lent is significant and helps reinforce the work done by the Chaplains and Christian Forum.
During their time in the school, the “Mission Week team” will host a number of School Services as well be on hand to share their message with pupils in the school.
As the school went into the first Fixture Free Weekend we induced, in the Chapel, our 2026 D Block new boys as well as boys “new” to Peterhouse in other Blocks. This formal Service took place in both the Peterhouse Boys and Peterhouse Girls Chapels. This provided us, in a formal full school sense, with the opportunity to welcome all our new pupils into the school. Equally, it was wonderful having so many of our new parents attend the services. We hope this will become, very much, a part of our traditional school calendar.
Once again, over the last couple of weeks we have enjoyed much success, over many disciplines, on our sports fields. These are well documented on a weekly basis as are significant achievements by individuals. Nevertheless, this we week we pay tribute to two Petreans who have done the country proud at the Cricket T20 World Cup in India and Sri Lanka. Both Brain Bennett and Ryan Burl were instrumental in securing a famous victory for Zimbabwe against Australia. We are, as a school, incredibly proud of their achievements and we continue to wish them well on their World Cup journey.
Please note that the sports programme changes after the half term with the start of Athletics and Winter sports activities.
Please note that the school offers you the opportunity to follow the progress of our long-distance buses for fixture free weekends (FFW) and half term only. A link for the respective long-distance buses is provided by the transport department via the respective WhatsApp groups which, once downloaded, will give you the ability to monitor the movement and progress of buses. Please email transport on transport@peterhouse.co.zw to be added onto the respective WhatsApp groups for long distance FFW and half term buses.
