Dear Parents and Guardians
Half term is here, and with it comes surprise that the highly anticipated Marondera winter remains strangely elusive. For our newer girls who haven’t spent a winter at Peterhouse, our experience tells us that they have a frosty few weeks to look forward to! I always say that our girls are made of tough stuff, and this is a characteristic that is grown in the second term.
The girls have been incredibly busy since the first fixture free, with sport, music and culture all featuring in the life of the school. This year’s Buckland Arts Competition has been a delight. Started nearly 40 years ago by Mrs Sue Davies, it continues to uncover hidden talents among our girls. And talented they are; performances and creations have been inspiring to watch.
I have recently returned from the Heads’ Conference where much time was spent discussing the move towards the Heritage Based Curriculum. HBC is not new to us, and much of this curriculum is already taught at Peterhouse. Please be assured that in all our deliberations and planning, the children’s wellbeing is at the forefront of our discussions.
Looking ahead, mock examinations are on the horizon for B Block through to VIth Form. Preparation is key, and I encourage the girls to dedicate time to their books this weekend. At the same time, rest is vital for growth. My hope is that this long weekend offers both, time to recharge, and time to be ready for the hard work and play that lie ahead. That’s all from me. I wish you a wonderful weekend with your families, and may the peace of Christ, which surpasses all understanding, guard and keep you, bringing everyone back safely.

PARENT-TEACHER MEETINGS
A reminder that A Block will have their parent-teacher consultation on Friday, 10th July between 10h00 and 11h45 in the PHG Dining Hall. This will be invaluable in advance of finalising your daughter’s IGCSE entries.
Consultation will be preceded by an Upper School open day for all A Block parents. This will take place at PHB from 08h00 and will introduce the Upper-School campus and important information on Vth Form AS and A Level subject choices will be given.
IGCSE, AS & A LEVEL MOCK EXAMINATIONS AND B BLOCK MID-YEAR EXAMINATIONS
Mock examinations for A Block, Vth and VIth Form, as well as mid-year examinations for B Block, start on Wednesday, 24th June. Rest this weekend, will be as important as some last-minute revision: good sleep habits, healthy eating, and regular exercise are of the utmost importance as they revise and practice past paper questions. Please encourage your daughter to try their best and to remember that writing these exams is a diagnostic opportunity for both pupil and teacher to ascertain areas that require further practice. Their results do not define their potential.
D BLOCK HISTORY TRIP TO GREAT ZIMBABWE
As part of their history syllabus, D Block travelled to visit Great Zimbabwe to learn about the history and cultural significance of the monument and its surrounds. Just after dawn on day one, 85 pupils and 5 teachers set off for Masvingo on two buses. The trip was long, but it was anything but dull. The girls settled in straight away—sleeping, reading, laughing, and playing—until we arrived just after 1300h. After exploring their hotel rooms, the girls enjoyed a refreshing swim and then tea on the patio, taking in the relaxing surroundings and building excitement for the days ahead.
Day 2 was packed with learning and discovery at the Great Zimbabwe Monument. The girls explored the Hilltop, where the king is believed to have once lived, and then moved on to the Great Enclosure, thought to be
home to his wives. They also visited the village and the museum, before completing a worksheet to consolidate
everything they had learned.
The third day began with a visit to the beautifully decorated Italian Chapel, a historic church built by Italian
prisoners-of-war during World War II, to commemorate their comrades who had died in captivity. This serene
and intriguing building is still used as a church today. From there, the group journeyed to the Boat Club, where
lunch was served on the lush green lawns on the banks of Lake Mutirikwi—a wonderful chance to slow down,
enjoy the scenery, and share the best moments of the day.
The final day marked the time to return home. Many thanks to all who helped facilitate this excellent adventure for our D Block girls.

BUCKLAND ARTS
Buckland Arts is an annual competition in the culture space at Peterhouse Girls. The theme for the year was Africa, My Africa. It invited recognition and appreciation of the continent’s rich heritage, resilience, and creativity within the cultural space. It encouraged the girls to embark on a holistic exploration of Africa’s diverse traditions and global cultural contributions through Poetry, Music, Dance, and Visual Arts. The competition was a resounding success and was concluded by a display of the best pieces from the various categories as well as two entertaining concerts. DEBATE
Zimbabwe National Debate
From the 16th – 18th of May, Shiloh Deetlefs participated in the Pre-WSDC International Debate Tournament, hosted in Vancouver, Canada. Congratulations to Shiloh for being awarded a shield for 9th best speaker out of 413 speakers. She also received recognition as the highest-ranking Zimbabwean speaker in the entire competition. In addition, her team was awarded a trophy for winning overall.
INTERACT CLUB
Members of the Interact Club visited Musha Wevana Children’s Home in Marondera, where they generously donated snacks for school-aged children. Additionally, they visited Ida Wekwako Old People’s Home, where they served pastries and drinks, and contributed clothing and groceries. The club members engaged with both the children and the residents at the home. They expressed their sincere gratitude to all PHB and PHG pupils for their support of Interact fundraising initiatives, acknowledging that their generosity made these visits and donations possible.
MATHS OLYMPIAD
Congratulations to Mikayla Chiremba and Thandeka Takawira for advancing to Round 2 of the Old Mutual Maths Olympiad. This next stage will be written on 24th June 2026.
PASTIS
The PASTIS Club convened a meeting with Marondera High, commencing with an icebreaker to alleviate students’ nerves prior to their presentations. The discussion focused on the impact of social influencers on teenage self-image and strategies for managing personal jealousy. Many students contributed mature insights on self-improvement, emphasizing the importance of refraining from sabotaging others out of jealousy. While most participants explored conflict resolution, some expressed concerns about potentially jeopardizing relationships.

SHONA CLUB
St George’s
The Shona Club participated in the St George’s event, which featured a variety of activities, including choral singing, drama, traditional mbira music, and poetry recitation. The event did not include competitive rankings, emphasizing instead the importance of showcasing the students’ diverse talents. Through their involvement, the D Block girls gained a deeper appreciation for self-confidence, the joy of performance, and the significance of effectively embodying their characters.
WORLD SCHOLARS CUP
The World Scholars Cup Club held a fixture with PHB, featuring debates, quiz, and the Scholars Challenge. Four debates were held, and the girls performed exceptionally well, winning two debates. For the quiz and Scholars Bowl, points were tallied at the end of the rounds, with the boys’ team placing first overall and the girls’ team placing second. D Block also attended to gain exposure, participating enthusiastically in the quiz rounds. Overall, the fixture was a great success, helping participants develop teamwork, confidence, and public speaking skills through friendly competition.
